Platform Analysis: Herscowitz

Eva Herscowitz, growing up in rural small-town Ohio, is a devout Democrat. Identifying strongly with the people of the United States, Herscowitz strongly supports the American Dream: that everyone deserves equal opportunity to succeed. This tenant, and the attack on the power of big business, are the two main components of liberalism that strongly influence her positions on issues.

Herscowitz’s pro-government intervention stance on education can be seen through the packages she plans to implement if elected. The Foundations Package and the Reform and Restoration Package both provide grants to states to establish education programs for young children and train teachers in the public school system. Without government intervention in education, Herscowitz argues, the future of America’s growing generation will be harmed. In dealing with vouchers, her opinion is that  they only do harm, depleting funds for public schools where the majority of students learn.

Herscowitz’s main component of her health care policy is universal health care. She argues that providing medical services for everyone prevents emergency room visits and , because of early detection of disease, reduces overall costs. This is consistent with her goal of providing equal opportunities to all Americans. She also plans to increase health care centers to address the mental health and opioid crisis.

Protecting the environment is one of Herscowitz’s priorities of the campaign. She goes so far as to implement a regressive tax on the usage of fossil fuels, which would encourage companies to use renewable sources of energy. She also plans to maintain the Clean Water and Air Act and continue the restoration of landscapes under the National Park Service.

Her main concern with regards to foreign policy is war: Herscowitz strives to balance preventing war while protecting our national security. She plans to use diplomatic exchanges to de escalate the nuclear crisis in North Korea. She strives for U.S involvement in foreign situations, like the HIV crisis, in order to ensure the security of the American people.

Herscowitz’s tax policies are consistent with her goal of decreasing the power of the wealthy. She has a straightforward plan: increase the taxes on the rich and decrease the taxes on the poor to reduce the income gap in America. Herscowitz’s tax plan stresses her commitment to equal opportunity for the lower class.

It is likely that Herscowitz’s support on many liberal sided positions will attract voters from Democrat-majority states such as California and Massachusetts. However, her harshness towards vouchers and her rather overbearing attitude of federal involvement with public school education may cause problems with those who look for limited government. Herscowitz does not mention in her healthcare platform how she will tackle the country’s budget issues that are caused by Obamacare. This can lead to concern over whether the country may have the money to meet her push for universal healthcare. Corporations may dislike Herscowitz as she seeks to create a regressive tax that will be placed on them for using fossil fuels. Herscowitz’s belief in protecting the environment, however, will appeal to many liberals and could encourage green energy use from the American people. Herscowitz’s apprehensiveness towards war projects non-aggressive and diplomatic policy with countries such as North Korea. Herscowitz, with her tax platform geared towards the lower class, will energize certain voters who seek more opportunities and wish to move up the social ladder with her platform. Herscowitz’s liberal platform and faithfulness to the Democratic Party will be very appealing to voters from blue states and will propel her to possibly winning support from the DNC.
