Platform Analysis: Sylvester
Across her platforms, Sylvester runs on a campaign of restraint in government. Her education platform is focused on three things: School Choice, Common Core, and College Costs. She strongly advocates for school choice, stating that the parents and students, not the bureaucracy in Washington, should have the right to dictate education. She advocates voucher scholarships for the poor to attend private schools because she believes that the poor should be able to learn wherever they want, not only in public schools because of income. Sylvester is completely against the Common Core: she is critical about the fact that Common Core only prepares students to get good test scores to get into college and not actually learning the information, losing the “true critical thinking skills” that should be taught.

Sylvester’s tax plan is simple: lower tax rates to stimulate growth. She wants to provide tax relief to lower and middle class people to encourage investment and growth across all classes of America. She opposes the current “class warfare” in America that makes taxes unaffordable for the poor. She also plans to lower corporate tax rates to increase trade and competition.

She plans to decrease carbon dioxide emissions through the cap and trade system; the government would place regulations on carbon dioxide emissions for each company and “leftover” emissions would be traded among companies. This, Sylvester argues, will encourage companies to innovate new devices and produce less carbon dioxide, which is beneficial to the economy.

Sylvester, being a Republican, advocates for government restraint and a complete repeal of Obamacare. She contends that Obamacare has lead to growing health prices and premiums, which harms the middle and upper classes. She strongly encourages individuals to choose their own insurance without the interference of the federal government. She also wants to decrease Medicare and Medicaid funds and give more block grants to states for healthcare.
She supports free and fair international trade, as it would stimulate American economy by creating more jobs, which results in a better standard of living. She wants America to stand firm and strong against terrorism and North Korea. However, preemptive strikes will only exacerbate the problem.

What Sylvester is saying about the Common Core is a misrepresentation. Like her, many people don’t understand that Common Core isn’t a curriculum, it’s just a set of standards that everyone has to meet. This view on CCSS will go well with voters because they think that the nation’s education system is failing students, leading to the want of repeal. Sylvester’s tax plan can be considered moderate. She wants lower taxes for all classes, not just the upper class which will probably get both moderate conservatives and moderate liberals to vote for her. Sylvester is also moderate in her plan for the environment. She plans on using government regulation to monitor carbon emissions that each company can give off. Some liberals would advocate for more government regulation but many could get behind her stance giving her bipartisan support. With her platform on healthcare, Sylvester will not get support from the other party as she is completely against Obamacare wanting to repeal it. She will also get conservative support by her stance on repeal Medicare and Medicaid. As seen during this previous election, the conservative candidate is against free trade and for building up dying industries but free and fair trade is a smart decision and idea that many people from both parties can get behind.
